Developing a Multilingual Patient Rights Resource for Individuals Hospitalized While in Immigration Custody

with Krishna Babaria, Swathi Ramkumar and Edgar Melendrez

This presentation is released on Monday, January 18, 2027.

Patients hospitalized while in immigration custody often face unique barriers to understanding their rights, and few standardized educational resources exist for this setting. This project is developing a multilingual, plain-language resource covering informed consent, interpreter services, privacy and confidentiality, and participation in medical decisions, created with physicians, medical students, legal experts, and community stakeholders. A planned second phase will evaluate feasibility, comprehensibility, and acceptability through patient and clinician feedback.
